When launching Microsoft Word or Excel, receiving the dreaded banner: "Product Activation Failed (Error code: 0xC004F074)" disrupts your workday. The error message usually states: "The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted."
Why Does Error 0xC004F074 Occur?
This error occurs when Microsoft Office is configured to look for a local corporate Key Management Service (KMS) server that does not exist or cannot be reached over port 1688. This is extremely common on PCs that previously ran pirated activator tools (like KMSPico) or used student/company licenses.
Solution 1: Remove Stale KMS Server Registration
- Close all open Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Navigate to your Office installation directory:
(If on 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows, use:cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16") - Clear any cached KMS hostnames:
cscript ospp.vbs /remhst - Check active license keys on your PC:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus - Look for Last 5 characters of installed product key. Uninstall old invalid keys using:
cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX
Solution 2: Install Your Genuine Retail License Key
Once stale KMS tokens are cleared, apply your genuine 25-character key purchased from WindowsKey:
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript ospp.vbs /act
The console will output: "<Product activation successful>".
